The Deck House School is ready to open its doors for its 30th anniversary year
(August 25, 2009) This will be my fourteenth year with the school and I find the beginning of a new year just as exciting as ever. We have space available for the start of the fall trimester and I would be happy to discuss any prospective students. In these times of change The Deck House School has stuck to its mission: The Deck House School is a small residential high school for boys who have struggled in the academic mainstream. Students and staff work together to create a community that builds positive relationships and encourages social, emotional, and academic growth We remain a school with a maximum enrollment of 12 students. We continue to scour the community for talented and dynamic adults to help our boys discover and pursue their passion. We continue to provide the encouragement and support that so many boys find lacking in larger, more traditional settings. We also continue to strive to grow and improve within our mission. This spring, our efforts were rewarded with accreditation by The New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Not every struggling teenage boy is a Deck House Boy. Our admissions process involves conversations with parents, consultants and other professionals, a review of all available testing, and finally a face to face interview here at the school. I look forward to talking with you about boys who might be a fit for our school. Best wishes as we start the new school year and I look forward to seeing many of you this fall in Charlotte. Turnabout / Stillwater Academy - Utah Attorney General Addresses Troubled Teens
(June 23, 2009) Youth at Turnabout Stillwater Academy, a treatment program for troubled teens, may have felt they had nothing in common with Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff. If you can graduate from this program, you can graduate from Harvard.” Shurtleff, who has served as Utah Attorney General for eight years, encouraged the youth to stand up for what is right and remember the support they have within the Turnabout program and the community. “Look out for each other,” said Shurtleff. “One person can save a life.” About Turnabout/Stillwater Academy: Turnabout/Stillwater Academy is a licensed, adolescent treatment program and private school dedicated to helping families and struggling teens find the pathway back to happiness and family harmony. Summit Prep Art Students Display at Hockaday Museum of Art
(May 27, 2009) Each year the Hockaway Museum of Art in Kalispell, Montana, hosts an exhibit entitled New Artists featuring selected two and three dimensional art pieces from area high school students. This year’s Spring 2009 month-long exhibit kicked off with a community open house where the public was invited to vote for best of show. Six students from Summit Prep were selected to display a piece of art from their portfolios. Our students’ art works demonstrated their unique individual style and interpretation across various mediums, including oil and acrylic paintings, wire sculpture, and plaster casting. Also on display was a short narrative by each student about their piece and about their personal reflections on art. One of Summit Prep’s students wrote “Art in my life is just something I do to relax my mind after hard thinking or frustration. It’s something I use to self soothe. I plan on using art in my future as a combination of all the things I like, chemistry, math, and literature, into a new model of my art.”- Barbara Cunningham Ed.D. - Summit Preparatory School - Where Transformations Happen - Admissions/Guidance 1-406-758-8139 - bcunningham@summitprepschool.org - www.summitprepschool.org

Wilderness Treatment Center Clients Visit Local Schools
(April 23, 2009) Wilderness Treatment Center clients have been busy visiting local schools in the past two weeks. Schools in the Flathead Valley, MT are addressing drug awareness and Wilderness Treatment Center is assisting in this by allowing their clients to share personal experiences with chemicals and the troubles drugs have caused. "We are glad to be a part of this effort to inform students of the problems caused by chemical use. By allowing students to hear it from people just like them, it has more meaning. It is also valuable for our clients to recognize that their story can be beneficial for others - this allows them to let go of some of the stigma related to their chemical dependency," says Patrick Hawkins Clinical Director of WTC.Ben Dorrington, Director of Referral Relations - 200 Hubbart Dam Rd. - 406-854-2832 - ben@wildernesstreatmentcenter.com -

(April 14, 2009) The annual Utah Recreation Therapy Association (URTA) Conference was held this year April 2nd & 3rd at Sundance, Utah. Recreation therapists from all over the state, and a few from out of state, met together to rub shoulders and attend two days worth of training. On Friday, at the annual awards ceremony, the therapeutic recreation program at West Ridge Academy was awarded the honor of "Outstanding Program". This program is headed by John Webb TRS, CTRS, LCP, and also includes Eli Kerr TRS, CTRS, and Alta Swarnes TRS, CTRS. All three members of the department are licensed by the state of Utah as Recreation Therapy Specialists. The recreation program at West Ridge Academy evolved into a Therapeutic Recreation program three years ago when John Webb took the helm of the department. Students at West Ridge participate in weekly therapeutic recreation groups, leisure education, and three therapeutic camping trips during their stay. Each activity with the student has therapeutic value and their progress through the program is assessed and tracked through industry recognized assessments and tools thus providing a clear picture of student's progress and how they are benefiting from their participation in therapeutic recreation. West Ridge Academy has been providing troubled youth and their families with hope and healing for over 45 years. We are nestled in the shadows of the Oquirrh Mountains on 88 acres of beautiful property in West Jordan. Cherry Gulch Student Council and Positive Leadership
(April 14, 2009) I just wanted to share a short inspiring story about our student council. This was only the third group of students that have been involved with Student Council here at Cherry Gulch. Elected for a three month term, the current group of officers had been motivated to be involved since the inception of the council but challenging behaviors and clinical complexities took first priority. Since their enrollments these young men have made huge progress here at Cherry Gulch, now demonstrating a readiness to be student leaders. During the students first meeting with the management team I had expected them to ask for ice cream socials and pizza parties but I was pleasantly surprised by the maturity of our students. They were thoughtful in their approach to requesting more funds for the council and intelligent in their ideas to raise the money. To read the entire story about this rewarding moment, click here.

Turnabout/Stillwater Academy Guest Speaker, Bryan Kehl, linebacker, NFL New York Giants
(March 25, 2009) Periodically we have guests come with unique stories or messages to share that we feel will be an inspiration to our students. We recently had one such speaker, Bryan Kehl, a linebacker in the NFL with the New York Giants. He shared with our students a lot of good counsel and entertaining stories, but the main thrust of his message was "Make everyday count." He discussed a few ideas of how to do that saying he had learned that, "If you take care of the minutes, the hours will take care of themselves." Bryan also discussed the importance of goal setting and told our students he had set the goal at age 13 of playing in the NFL. All his friends laughed at him, but he discussed how he pursued his goal and finally made it last year and had a great rookie year. He ended his speech with a little friendly bet. He bet our students that they could mix up a Rubix cube and he would solve it in less than two minutes. If he didn't, then he would pay for each of them to go to the restaurant of their choice in Salt Lake City. If he won, then they all had to agree to apply what he had taught them about goal setting that day and set five goals of things they wanted to be, or do, or have. Our students were impressed by much more than Bryan's 1 min. and 50 second performance, and enjoyed their personal goal setting session. We thought you might enjoy this link to a brief TV spot about Bryan's visit. (March 14, 2009) Rick Johnson is Executive Director of Summit Preparatory School in Kalispell, Montana. He began his career as an outpatient adolescent therapist, and his experience led him to reconsider how best to serve adolescents when outpatient care provides too little and long-term inpatient treatment seems too extreme. This led to his founding Summit Preparatory School in 2003 with his wife Jan, also an MSW, and the opportunity to build a program based on a different perspective to treatment. West Ridge Academy Girl's Basketball Ties for 3rd
(March 12, 2009) The West Ridge Academy Girl's basketball team tied for 3rd in Region 17 this season. That's the best finish for the girls since West Ridge began its girl's sports program. It's quite an accomplishment given the fact that all the other teams in our region have played together for years, and have returning players. We start out each season with a brand new team and for some it's the first time playing the sport. So as a coach it's very tough to try to put a team together in just a couple of weeks and then compete with the other schools that have been to summer camps, clinics, tournaments and such. The girls on this year's team were focused on creating a great TEAM environment. Through that teamwork we were able to come away from the season knowing that we accomplished some remarkable things. As stated earlier we tied for third in our region. We finished our region schedule with a record of 5 wins and 5 losses. As a team we are very proud of that accomplishment. We were also able to put a great defensive team effort together as we were able to hold one of the leading scorers in the state, averaging over 20 points a game, to 5 points. At an individual level, we had two girls named to the All Region Team. Those girls were Alexa L. and Elizabeth C. They were our team captains and exemplified great leadership skills on and off the court throughout the year. We did not meet all of our goals however. We had a goal to make it to the state tournament in Richfield. We ended up losing our "play in game" by a score of 56-36. We were so proud of how hard the girls played and for their determination to keep fighting to the end. In the locker room we talked about the importance of goals and the truth that even if you don't quite reach the goal you've set, the process of working towards that goal makes you a better person. West Ridge Academy is a residential treatment center for at risk youth.

Steve Bozak CEP from Albany New York, visits Agape Boarding School
(March 3, 2009) Steve is the first consultant from IECA to visit our boarding school since it moved to Missouri in 1996. While on his trip he was able to meet the staff and many of the 120 students, along with speaking to some of the Koreans in their own language. They all like that so they could speak privately about being at the school. Many of Agape students have come to us because they needed the structure and support to get back on tract behaviorally and academically. He says he found the students to be generally happy and working on their issues. Steve also went out to explore the ranch and tour the entire property on ATV's in the unusual cold weather. To top it all off, Scott Smith, the marketing director, and Steve went to the all famous Lamberts Cafe. This is the famous restaurant where you must pay close attention or you might get hit with a thrown dinner roll. Steve had a great time and plans to send more students 7~12 to the school in the near future.
TI Speaks To The Youth At West Ridge
(February 5, 2009) Recently, the rapper TI was in Salt Lake City for a scheduled concert. While he was here, he agreed to visit our campus and meet with the youth at West Ridge. TI had planned on spending an hour with us before his concert later that night. Being middle-aged, I didn’t know who he was when I first heard he was coming, but all of the students certainly did. TI is one of Atlantic Record’s most successful artists, and he is also co-CEO of Grand Hustle Records. His most recent album, released in the summer of 2008, debuted at #1 on the HIP HOP Charts. TI also appeared in the 2007 film, “American Gangster,” starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crow. As we sat in our seats waiting for his arrival the excitement grew. This was not only a chance to rub shoulders with a famous rapper, but also be able to ask him questions. As he entered the building, there were screams from excited young ladies. He just smiled and waved at the crowd. His hope in coming was to give inspiration and encouragement for a more positive future and better things to come. He encouraged the youth to push their limits and reach goals that nobody dreamed were possible—just like he did. These are some of the key points that he spoke about. “Take your education seriously and be willing to invest in your future. Anything is possible if you believe in yourself. The sky’s the limit. What you do with the time you spend here, meaning West Ridge, will determine where you’ll go. You won’t be in this position you’re in forever”. When asked what success meant to him he responded, “Success to me is to have my children be outstanding, successful citizens in society because long after my fame is gone, long after my music stops selling, and I’m not doing films, my children will be a reflection of me.” I was surprised at how down to earth he was. He realized people are not really in love with him as a person, because they really don’t know him—rather they are fascinated with his fame. He tries to keep that in focus. Although he had a concert that night he didn’t seem to be in a big hurry and stayed to answer all the student’s questions. It was a rare opportunity and we feel very fortunate to have had TI spend time with our students. TI continues to travel around the nation meeting with local youth groups and sharing his message.
Summit Preparatory School featured in Winter Issue of MONTANA LIVING
(January 26, 2009) Ask any Educational Consultant and they will tell you that the best way to understand what a therapeutic program has to offer is to visit it. That is exactly what Dave Reese, the editor of Montana Living Magazine, did this fall. Dave wanted to get a clear understanding of what a therapeutic school is all about, so he came out to Summit Prep and spent a few days learning about our program and our students. Initially he interviewed Rick and Jan Johnson, co-founders of Summit Prep, and learned about our vision and how Summit Prep came to be. Dave became intrigued and asked to spend some more time on campus. He toured our facility, sat in on classes, talked with both therapeutic and academic staff, and of course visited with student. He also enjoyed a meal or two prepared by Bernie our “chef extraordinaire”. The outcome of Dave’s visits is presented in an article with photos featured in the December 2008 issue of Montana Living. You can view the article on our website at: www.summitprepschool.org/currentevents. To learn more about Montana Living go to: www.montanaliving.com

Summit Preparatory School in Kalispell, MT Revises Tuition and Fee Schedule
(January 24, 2009) In response to the current national economy, we have revised our tuition and fee schedule to make the cost of our therapeutic boarding school services more manageable for families. First, we have reduced the amount of money required “up front” at the time of enrollment, so there isn’t so much of a roadblock to getting young people the help they need, when they need it. Second, we have increased our flexibility in regards to payment options, which allow families to pay by month rather than by semester block, as well as accepting payments via Master Card and Visa. Third, we continue to file insurance claims for students’ therapy sessions, to help families recoup financially where applicable. Fourth, families in need can apply for limited scholarships (reduced tuition) through our online FAST application process.
