Mary has been working in the adventure based therapy industry since 1999 serving youth, adolescents, and their families. She has experience as a therapist in wilderness programs serving both adolescent girls and boys with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders since 2006. Mary joins with the students to uncover the emotional distress, limiting beliefs, and cognitive distortions that result in negative coping strategies, self destructive behaviors and conflictual relationships.
Mary is dually licensed as a Professional Counselor (LPC), and Clinical Addictions Specialist (LCAS) in the state of North Carolina.
Mary received her MA in Counseling Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpintaria, California. Mary's clinical orientation is grounded in "Depth Psychology", which employs a Jungian psychodynamic approach. Mary works with clients to point out and develop discrepancies, validate and encourage the experience, while using a strengths based and solutions focused approach to assist the student and family to engage in the treatment process. Mary relies on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to work with emotionally dysregulated students. She also specializes in dually diagnosed mental health issues co-occurring with substance misuse, abuse and dependency, codependency and relationship issues, PTSD, emerging personality disorders, grief/loss, depression, oppositional behaviors, and cognitive learning differences creates an accurate map of both the past, present and future for her students and families. As an avid outdoor's woman, Mary worked with special needs youth, adolescents, and their families as an instructor, and therapist in equine assisted therapeutic programming. Mary also enjoys horseback riding, snowboarding, running, yoga and meditation, knitting, cooking, reading, gardening, travel and animal welfare.
