Wilderness Adventure Therapy (WAT) for Adolescents, Teens and Young Adults
Wilderness Adventure Therapy Programs, also known as WAT, are really the best practices from traditional Wilderness Therapy combined with the benefits of High Adventure Therapy. Students receive the benefits of traditional Wilderness Therapy by living in the outdoors for periods of 30 to 90 days. While living in the outdoors, students will experience the same benefits of a traditional wilderness program plus they get to experience the added benefits of adventure therapy. Adventure activities may include rock climbing, bouldering, canyoneering, kayaking, mountain biking, mountaineering, and more. However, these activities are not used as just recreational activities. Rather each activity is used as a tool to create experiences designed to reach a desired therapeutic outcome. Similar to traditional wilderness programs students live in the outdoors for extended periods of time – however in WAT programs, adventure activities become a primary tool for therapeutic change.
